Buddy was cruelly set on fire and strangled with an extension cord – but look at him today

It’s heartbreaking how cruel some people can be to innocent dogs. Buddy, a happy and carefree dog, became a victim of a horrific attack in April 2021 when a child set him on fire, leaving his face severely burned and an extension cord around his neck. Due to the perpetrator’s age, no charges were filed. Buddy was rescued by the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi and received life-saving care from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Despite the extent of his injuries, Buddy began a slow but hopeful recovery. Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, a veterinary surgeon, noted that while Buddy faced a long road ahead, his vital signs were stable. Remarkably, his eyesight remained intact, though his eyelids required surgical repair. Buddy’s resilience shone through as he endured bandage changes and skin grafts, steadily improving and even learning basic commands.
Buddy’s story went viral, garnering widespread support. By August 2021, a major milestone was reached when his bandages were removed without sedation, revealing he could still see. This marked a turning point in his recovery, and his playful personality began to reemerge. Sandy Williams, director of the Tunica Humane Society, shared that Buddy became happier and more energetic, often seen walking with a ball in his mouth.
While Buddy has made incredible progress, he will have lifelong special needs, including sensitive skin, eye drops, and sunscreen protection. His journey serves as a testament to resilience and the power of compassion. The Tunica Humane Society hopes Buddy’s story will inspire change and justice for animals like him.
