WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, June 3rd, conservative strategist Steve Guest took to X posting a screenshot of various liberal media outlets such as The New York Post, The Washington Post, and NPR, highlighting what appears to be a coordinated effort in tweaking language describing illegal immigrants.
“ORWELLIAN: The New York Times, NPR, The Washington Post, and Axios are now calling illegal aliens ‘unauthorized immigrants,'” he wrote. In the post on X, it appears Guest put together a mash-up of recent articles written by each of the various liberal media sites, showcasing in a yellow high-lighter the places where “unauthorized immigrants” are mentioned.
“These Democratic governors are trying to curb health care for unauthorized immigrants,” a headline by NPR shows. “Efforts to arrest and remove unauthorized immigrants appear most aggressive in five southern states with Democratic-leaning cities,” an article for Axios reports.
“Some judges have tossed charges against unauthorized immigrants who fail to register with the federal government under a new Trump administrative initiative,” an article for The Washington Post reveals. “Although Republicans say they want to remove incentives for people to enter the country illegally, unauthorized immigrants generally do not receive federal benefits,” an article for The New York Times reads.
In a follow-up post in the same thread, he pointed out how this transformation of language concerning those who enter the country illegally is a lot like “newspeak” from George Orwell’s popular novel, “1984,” Trending Politics reported.
“1984 is playing out before our very eyes. And the Left is playing the long game with their propaganda effort here. They’re trying to slowly shift the narrative on illegal immigration in the wake of Biden allowing in 10 million plus illegal aliens,” he wrote in the follow-up thread as he responded to Elon Musk, who commented, “New propaganda term just dropped.”
In reference to “1984,” the totalitarian regime in the novel keeps the people under control, reducing their vocabulary and simplifying concepts to eliminate nuance — an example is how they take the word “bad” and change it to “ungood.”
The term “newspeak” is often used in America to refer to the mainstream media or government sanitizing reality with ridiculous and vague euphemisms like “unauthorized immigrant,” as reported by Trending Politics. Experts believe that the term is designed to soften the crime of crossing the border illegally.
